本期主讲人

Xuemei Chen got her Ph.D. at Birkbeck, University of London, UK. She is currently a lecturer of College English (大学通用英语), and English for Science and Technology Communication (科技英语写作与陈述) in the School of Foreign Languages, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Her research interests include, but not limited to, language learning and teaching, bilingualism, emotion and humour studies, psycholinguistics and intercultural communication.

主要内容

The Britons, especially the Englishmen, are alleged to have a unique sense of humour which is elusive, unintelligible and inimitable to people of other nations including the Americans who share the same first language with them. They find humour in almost everything, typically through self-ridicule and ridiculing others by a heavy use of irony, sarcasm, understatement and satire, and usually with deadpan delivery. The high unfathomability of British humour is likely to pose great challenges to outsiders especially English learners all over the world. This workshop introduces the Britons’ sense of humour, how outsiders perceive British humour based on the latest studies, and the secret to crack the British humour code.
